The 3 Ways Google Shows Businesses
Most business owners think of "Google" as one thing. It's actually three separate systems, and knowing which one matters most for you changes what you should focus on first.
- 1Organic Search Results — the regular list of websites Google shows for a search. This is built over months through content and technical work, not overnight.
- 2Google Maps / The Local Pack — the map with three business pins shown for "near me" searches. This is driven mainly by your Google Business Profile, not your website.
- 3Google Business Profile — your free business listing showing hours, reviews, and photos. Most small businesses never fully claim or optimise this.
Five Things You Can Check Right Now
Before spending money on anything, walk through this yourself. Most of it costs nothing but time.
- ✓Have you actually claimed and verified your Google Business Profile? Search your own business name — if you see an "Own this business?" prompt, you haven't.
- ✓Is your business Name, Address, and Phone number written exactly the same everywhere online?
- ✓Does your homepage actually mention your city or service area in plain text, not just inside an image?
- ✓Do you have real customer reviews, and do you reply to them?
- ✓Does your site load correctly on a phone, not just a desktop computer?
The mistake almost every small business makes: trying to appear for every possible search term at once — "best," "top," "affordable" — before Google even understands what the business does or where it operates. Chasing broad terms too early usually means ranking for nothing at all.
What Actually Moves the Needle
If you only do three things this month, do these:
- 1Fully complete your Google Business Profile — every field, real photos, accurate hours.
- 2Ask your last five happy customers for a genuine Google review.
- 3Make sure your city and what you do are written in plain text on your homepage.
