Why Website Speed Quietly Kills Sales

You don't need to become technical — just know what to ask whoever manages your website.

Why This Matters More Than It Seems

A slow website doesn't announce itself as a problem. Visitors don't complain — they simply leave, often within the first few seconds, before they ever see what you actually offer. Every extra second a page takes to load increases the chance a visitor gives up and goes elsewhere, often to a competitor's site instead.

The Five Most Common Causes

In our experience, slow websites almost always trace back to one or more of these:

  • 1Oversized, uncompressed images — a photo straight from a phone camera can be 5–10x larger than it needs to be for the web.
  • 2Cheap or overcrowded hosting — shared hosting packed with too many other sites competing for the same resources.
  • 3Too many plugins (on WordPress sites) — each one adds its own code that has to load, even ones barely used.
  • 4No caching set up — the site rebuilds itself from scratch on every visit instead of serving a ready-made version.
  • 5Unoptimised fonts and scripts — heavy design elements or tracking scripts that aren't actually necessary.
A simple way to check it yourself: search for "Google PageSpeed Insights," paste in your website address, and it'll show a score along with the specific issues slowing you down. You don't need to fix everything it lists — but a very low mobile score is a clear signal something needs attention.

Questions to Ask Whoever Manages Your Website

You don't need to understand the technical fix yourself — you just need to ask the right questions and expect a clear answer:

  • ?"Are my images compressed for the web, or are they the original camera-size files?"
  • ?"Is caching set up on this site?"
  • ?"How many plugins are currently active, and do we actually need all of them?"
  • ?"What's our current load time, and where is it tested from?"
